About University of California Los Angeles

The history of the university begins in 1919, when the State Legislature created the Southern Branch of the University of California.

The name of UCLA was given in 1929, after the university was moved to its new campus in Westwood.

In August 29, 1882, the State Normal School at Los Angeles was opened, including an elementary school, being renamed Los Angeles State Normal School, in 1887.

The Southern Branch campus was opened on September 15, 1919, providing 2-year undergraduate programs to 250 Latter and Science students, as well as for more than 1200 students in the Teacher’s College.

Today, the UCLA campus houses more than 170 buildings spread on almost 420 acres, and the university has an enrollment of more than 26 000 undergraduate and over 12 000 graduate students.

The university consists in 7 general campus professional schools, 4 professional schools for the health sciences, as well as the College of Letter and Science.

UCLA was highly ranked by Newsweek, placing it on the 12th place among the Top 100 Global Universities, as well as by the U.S. News & World Report, The Washington Monthly and by The Times Higher Education Supplement’s list of the top 200 universities in the world.

The teams that are representing the university in collegiate championships are known as the Bruins, having blue and gold as their official colors and Joe and Josephine Bruin as their official mascots.

Several UCLA people have been awarded with the Nobel Prize for various achievements, including 6 professors and 5 alumni. There are also 15 Academy Award winners, 10 National Medal of Science winners and 11 MacArthur Fellows winners.
