The history of the university begins in 1919, when the State Legislature created the Southern Branch of the University of California.
The name of UCLA was given in 1929, after the university was moved to its new campus in Westwood.
In August 29, 1882, the State Normal School at Los Angeles was opened, including an elementary school, being renamed Los Angeles State Normal School, in 1887.
The Southern Branch campus was opened on September 15, 1919, providing 2-year undergraduate programs to 250 Latter and Science students, as well as for more than 1200 students in the Teacher’s College.
Today, the UCLA campus houses more than 170 buildings spread on almost 420 acres, and the university has an enrollment of more than 26 000 undergraduate and over 12 000 graduate students.
